Above left: [Enlarge] A view of the lake in Kandy. I don't know whether it is a natural lake or not. It has a look of being artificial. An Austrian girl, Susi, and I walked around the lake. It only takes about an hour and a half.

Above centre: [Enlarge] The white Buddha, a fairly modern, probably concrete, statue which stands at the top of a hill overlooking Kandy.

Above right: [Enlarge] This was the largest spider I saw in India or Shri Lanka. It was in my bedroom one night in Kandy. I of course got it out before retiring but not until I got this photograph of it with my Lonely Planet Guide next to it to give it some scale.

Each morning the Elephants are herded out from the Orphanage compound, across the road and down to the river to bath, which they really seem to enjoy.

Above left: [Enlarge] A view of a palm grove in the Botanical Gardens on the outskirts of Kandy.

Above right: Fruit bats, which are very large creatures, the largest type of bat, in the Botanical gardens. There were literally thousands of these roosting in the tall trees at the gardens.
