PHOTOGRAPHS OF NORTHERN SHRI LANKA, 1 - 4 Feb 2002.

Photos of some of the ruins in a place called Polonaruwa. The statue on the left [Enlarge] is fairly untypical, in that it's a quite realistic representation, unlike the more stylised representations of the Buddha.

Above Right [Enlarge]:

Trincomallee in the north east.

Above left: [Enlarge] This photograph was taken in the fort. I took it because it was the most striking example of this type of tree which drops roots down from it's branches, but also just for the hell of it as you're not allowed to take photographs inside the fort.

Above right: [Enlarge] A view from the Dutch Beach of the headland where the fort stands.

Above left: [Enlarge] About 7 kms north of Trincomallee is the idyllic beach of  Nilaveili. There is just one hotel operating there at the moment, the Nilaveili Beach Resort. The others were ransacked during the Tamil revolts. The surviving hotel was apparently the only one protected by armed security guards. Now that there has been a peace agreement, this beach will no doubt now become highly commercialised. The view on the right [Enlarge] was looking south from a point at the top end of the beach about 3 km north of the resort. I reckoned at this point that there would have been very few westerners north of me in Shri Lanka at that time. I only saw one western couple at the beach resort itself.
